From religious house to cultural heritage and tourist icon of Porto, literary inspiration, object of historical and artistic study, the Igreja de Santa Clara is not only a reference of the Portuguese Baroque, as one of the largest examples of the national gilded woodwork.

A landmark

The church of Santa Clara do Porto is classified as a National Monument since 1910 and has been included in a Special Protection Zone since 1964. It is an integral part of the Historic Centre of Oporto, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1996.

Intervention
and recovery

2014-2015: Intervention in the building’s roofs and in the surrounding area to address the damage caused by the entry of rainwater infiltration, which led to termite infestation. 2016-2021: Physical intervention to stabilise the structure of the building, including the conservation and restoration of the integrated heritage, covering the church, choirs, sacristy and reception area.

Musical heritage

Between the 18th and 19th centuries, music was composed for the nuns who lived in this convent. Among the composers, we highlight Francisco de São Boaventura, António da Silva Leite and Marcos de Portugal.

Every Tuesday and Saturday Mass is celebrated at 6pm. These days, visits close at 5pm.
